Hotel Chelsea Manhattan comes out in Spain.
Joe Ambrose is working with his Spanish publisher, Fernando Polanco, on the forthcoming Spanish edition of Ambrose’s book, Chelsea Hotel Manhattan. In Spain the book will be titled Hotel Chelsea Manhattan.
It features previously unseen interviews with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Paul Bowles. The Spanish edition will include a unique CD specially comissioned by Fernando Polanco and produced by Alba and Joe Ambrose. Contributors to the CD will include Alma, Velvet Underground founder Angus Maclise, Chuck Prophet, Herbert Huncke, Tav Falco, Tiago Almeida, Ira Cohen, and William Burroughs.
Iconic hiphop DJ/producer Arthur Baker (Afrika Bambaataa, New Order, Bob Dylan) has just recorded Ambrose's Radio E for the CD.
The Spanish version of the book will feature endorsements from writers Tony White and Kirk Lake. Tony White says, “Punk, junk, invasive as a drunk, Ambrose's essential book goes very much against the flow and into the dark well-spring of a seemingly ungentrifiable bohemian culture that nonetheless went mainstream, but is certainly vanishing now and which otherwise we might be fooled into thinking never really existed.” Kirk Lake says, "The phantasmagorical nature of the Hotel Chelsea milieu is best captured by Joe Ambrose's Chelsea Hotel Manhattan - a kaleidoscopic mix of reportage, hard-boiled journalism, conjecture and fantasy."
Ambrose, wintering in Tangier Morocco, says: "Fernando is settng up an ambitious imprint in Spain at a time when the whole industry is under the most conservative sort of pressure. The other authors he has in mind are a challenging and provocative bunch - right down my street - or right down some unlit back alley"
